AI, academic integrity, and career readiness: guiding students to use tools ethically (2026)

A more useful framing is:

What “ethical AI use” looks like for resumes
Ethical use is not moral theatre. It is a practical set of rules students can follow.
Allowed (encourage)
- grammar and clarity edits

- alignment checks against a real job description
- brainstorming truthful ways to describe real work

Discouraged (warn)
- generating achievements or metrics “to sound impressive”
- adding technologies not used
- writing a resume from scratch with no grounding in the student’s actual work
Prohibited (be explicit)
- fabricating employment, roles, projects, publications, or awards
- copying job descriptions into the resume as “experience”
If you publish these categories, students get clarity and staff get consistency.
How to teach authenticity without shaming students
Many students feel pressure to “sound professional.” They interpret that as “sound like everyone else.”
Your teaching goal is to replace that with a different standard:
- clarity beats cleverness
- proof beats adjectives
- specificity beats buzzwords
If a student can’t explain a line on a whiteboard, it doesn’t belong on the resume.
The institution’s role: create safe defaults
Students will use tools anyway. Institutions can reduce risk by providing safe defaults:
- an ATS-safe template
- a transparent rubric (what “good” means)
- an approved workflow (draft → feedback → iterate → advisor for strategy)
- guidance on aligning to real postings
This shifts AI use from secret optimisation to coached improvement.
What to ask vendors (so you don’t buy risk)
If you procure AI resume tools, ask:
- Does the tool write resumes, or does it provide feedback?
- Does it explicitly discourage fabrication and invented metrics?
- Can staff see and explain the rubric?
- Does it reduce sameness, or does it push a single template voice?
- Can it support job description alignment without encouraging keyword spam?
If a platform’s fastest path to a higher score is to “add more achievements,” you are buying future credibility problems.
